The McMurray Métis and Imperial celebrated the signing of a long-term benefits agreement and commitment to collaboration for the mutual benefit of both parties. The agreement was celebrated on May 5th at the McMurray Métis Monthly Members Meeting. Close to 100 people attended the event, including the McMurray Métis Board of Directors, Local members and Imperial representatives. The event included traditional Métis fiddling and jigging.
The relationship between Imperial and the McMurray Métis began more than 10 years ago. Through ongoing engagement and dialogue the parties identified the need for a more inclusive and structured framework to discuss potential impacts and mitigations related to Imperial’s existing Kearl oilsands operation and the future Aspen oilsands project. As well, the framework provides enhanced opportunities for consultation and environmental stewardship related to those activities. The agreement also outlines the framework for economic benefit through community funding and business contracting opportunities.
“Imperial and the McMurray Métis have many shared values and interests in Imperial’s activities in the oilsands region. This agreement will provide for a more inclusive approach between Imperial and the McMurray Métis to better understand how we can collaboratively develop those resources for the mutual benefit of both parties, in a respectful and responsible manner.”
-Bryan Pickett, Vice-President of Production, Imperial.
“2018 is the ‘Year of the McMurray Métis’ and this agreement will allow us to support cultural, language and traditional programming, hold the annual Elders Christmas Celebration and host our upcoming Metis Festival. Imperial and its employees must be commended for their drive and dedication in developing this agreement that shares our joint vision.”
- Gail Gallupe, President of McMurray Métis
