The McMurray Metis are holding a membership campaign from February 12th to 16th to update its current membership and increase its overall members. The theme of the campaign is 2018: Year of the McMurray Metis.
Each day of the campaign we are focusing on a different reason why a community member should join the McMurray Metis:
• Metis Harvesting Rights;
• Scholarships for Your (Families) Education;
• A local Cultural Center for Metis Activities;
• Better Employment Opportunities and
• Consultation by Governments with Metis.
As a thank you to everyone for participating in the membership campaign we are holding a members’ appreciation dinner on Friday February 16, at 5:00pm at the Unifor Building.
“We know our members by name, and since the wildfire in 2016, we have rebuilt our records and backed up our database. Our concern is there were members of the Local in the past that we have lost contact with and the membership campaign is good way to reconnect with the regional metis community.”
- Gail Gallupe, President of McMurray Metis.
“There have been court decisions and government officials questioning who represents the Metis people in the northeast. We are the largest Metis Local in Wood Buffalo and have a proven track record of 31 years of success in the Fort McMurray community. The goal of our membership campaign is to encourage new members to join the Local, as any Metis person of any age can sign up.”
- Bill Loutitt, Chief Executive Officer of McMurray Metis.
